February 1st is the anniversary of the birth, in 1758, of prominent engineer, Agustín de Betancourt y Molina (1758-1824), in Puerto de la Cruz. On the north side of the square outside Puerto's main church of Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia is a bust (pictured above) in his memory. The Hotel Monopol (photo), opposite the bust, is built on the site of his birthplace. [Source: PuntoInfo]
