The sand and flower carpets that are a tradition in La Orotava in Tenerife, have also become a huge tourist attraction for the town. The 2006 Corpus Cristi celebrations in La Orotava were unique in that, as well as carpets made by local alfombristas (carpet makers); individuals and many associations from within the Canary Islands, there were carpets made by visiting representatives of various other countries. Pictured here is detail from the carpet by Humantla from the State of Tiaxacala in Mexico. It's a circular design with a sand carpet in the centre, bordered by whole roses, rose petals, grapes, lilies and other plant material.
