Actually, the jury is still out over whether this - which is found all around the valleys of the north of the island and, is used in basket making - is bamboo or sugar cane. It's probably more likely to the the latter, since the first crop grown on a large scale on the island was sugar cane and by the middle of the 16th century Tenerife had twelve sugar mills in operation.
