Pedrito, the Spanish footballer who plays for FC Barcelona and the Spain national football team, who was born in La Laguna and raised in Abades (Arico), in Tenerife has been honoured for his part in Spain's 2010 World Cup win in South Africa.
Not quite the Sainthood I'd suggested (see I was only half joking, because the importance of the first Tenerife player to play in a World Cup final, let alone win it, makes the 22 year old into an enormous hero in the hearts of the islanders), Pedro Rodríguez Ledesma was yesterday named Hijo Ilustre de la Isla de Tenerife (Illustrious Son of the Island of Tenerife) in a presentation made by president of the island Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior.
Today, Pedro will also be presented with the Medalla de Oro del Archipiélago (Archipelago Gold Medal), as was Gran Canaria born player, David Silva.
