Nao Santa Maria

Nao Santa Maria

It was a long time ago that I went to the museum at El Parque Museo El Castillo (Castle Museum Park) in Los Realejos. Finally able to read the inscription on the ship, after scanning the print to the computer, it says, Nao Santa Maria. Duh! Of course, Santa Maria was the largest of the three ships used by Christopher Columbus in his first voyage across the Atlantic Ocean in 1492. It was a nao, which simply means "ship" in old Spanish. Columbus had this ship repaired in Gran Canaria and stopped off in La Gomera. He never came to Tenerife, for the good reason that, in 1492, the island was still unconquered by the Spanish. The castle is described as a 19th Century fortification. In truth, it is more of a Victorian folly of a fairyland castellated mansion, however, that still possesses it's own charms. Unfortunately, it appears, this is no longer open to the public.

Canaries Day

Canaries Day

Today is Día de Canarias (Canaries Day), the annual event and local holiday, which celebrates "Canarianess" and remembers the anniversary of the first session of the autonomous Canary Islands Parliament, which took place on May 30th, 1983. Here a group of school children, dressed in typical Canarian costume celebrate Canaries Day typically with music and dancing. Parents and friends were also treated to the free lunch of fresh tuna in sauce, gofio and potatoes, produced by a group of mothers and, very nice it was too! See where this picture was taken. [?]

Maybe this is corny?

Maybe this is corny?

But sharing the same field as the safflower and, which earlier in the year was growing potatoes, there are these rows of millo (maize, or sweetcorn).

As well as being the base ingredient of one of the varieties of the islands' native foodstuffs, gofio (my preferred variety), corncobs are also essential for a number of typically Canarian dishes, such as Costillas con piñas (Potatoes with corncobs and pork ribs and served with coriander sauce); Puchero (Canary Islands Stew) or in Potaje de Berros (Watercress pottage). Hungry yet? Smile

Cook's Gold

Cook's Gold

Real saffron can be worth more per ounce than gold, but this thistle-like yellow flower, safflower, a.k.a. "bastard saffron", used in the Canary Islands instead is much cheaper and more abundant. Locals still call this azafran (saffron) and it still has to be picked by hand (and it prickles, nastily), then dried, which means a lot of backbreaking, manual work goes into producing a very small quantity.

Blackberry Brambles

Blackberry Brambles

Vines you expect because they are cultivated. More exotic things, such as oranges or the avocado tree next door, are not unexpected, but the north of Tenerife never stops providing surprises and one in particular, if you are more familiar with the barren south of Tenerife - or even the rural English landscape - is that, among the more expected palm trees and cactus, the roadsides here are also lined with blackberry brambles. (Do be careful where you pick them from though as, on main roads they may well have been treated with pesticides and other chemicals, as well as having been choked by a steady stream of exhaust fumes.)

Sea Spray

Sea Spray

It isn't so much fun when weather reports talk about high winds and predictions for waves of four (or one case recently, six) meters in the north of Tenerife. However, I've never been one for vegetating on golden sand beaches. I'd rather watch paint dry. My idea of a beach is one where the sea does interesting things and makes patterns when it crashes against the rocks, as it's doing here on Buenavista del Norte's most inaptly named, Playa de la Arenas (The Sands Beach). Sand is about the only thing this beach hasn't got! See where this picture was taken. [?]

Tenerife Weather – say hello to Eyore

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA When you either live in or frequently visit Tenerife you become acquainted with weather terms that you’re unlikely to have encountered before.

Words such as bruma (low level cloud) and calima (hot, sand-filled wind coming in from the Sahara that causes a misty white-out) will fall from your lips the way that rain and cold do in the UK.

But if you live in and around Puerto de la Cruz, there’s another phrase that you’ll unfortunately find becoming a fairly frequent visitor to your vocabulary and that’s panza de burro - “under the belly of the donkey”.

Summer brings trade winds to Tenerife and sometimes they bring cloud which sits stubbornly on the north side of Mount Teide creating skies in Puerto that, every time you look up, are grey – the grey belly of the donkey.

And so far this May, that damned donkey has been well and truly tethered above us, shifting his butt on no more than half a dozen days.

imageIt has to be said, whatever exaggerations there are around weather differences between the north and the south of Tenerife, the belly of the donkey is definitely one we could do without.

So, when Eyore decides to spend a bit of time in his favourite resort, there’s only one thing to do; hire a car, get out of town and find the sun.

Drive just about anywhere else on Tenerife and the chances are you’ll discover that everyone else is enjoying glorious weather, but if you want to stack the deck in favour of finding the sun, try these:

Santa Cruz – despite popular belief that because the island’s capital is ‘in the north’ it must be cold, cloudy and/or wet, in fact, because it’s in the east the default setting for the city is most definitely hot, sunny and dry. Explore its beautiful gardens and plazas, give the credit cards a workout in its stylish shops or by-pass the city and head to one of Tenerife’s best beaches - Las Teresitas.

Teide National Parkfollow the route that takes you along Tenerife’s spine and into the volcanic wonderland of the crater. Take the cable car to below the summit for spectacular vistas over the archipelago or get into some Tenerife walks in this incredible landscape where the only other life you’ll encounter is lizards – and definitely NO donkeys!

Drivers to be required to "suck" as well as "blow"

image

If the Guardia Civil are to do less breath tests, this is soon to be balanced out when saliva tests for toxic drugs, narcotics and psychotropic substances become obligatory by law in Spain with a reform of the Penal Code.

Until now, drivers are only obliged to "blow" into a breathalyzer. If they refuse to "suck" the drug detector, police currently have to wait for the authorization of a judge to be able to carry out the test. Your rights in this are going to change.

Once the modification of article 796 of the Criminal Justice Law has been passed - currently it's before the Senate - drivers will be obliged to give samples of saliva for these tests and police will also be able to request blood, urine and other tests.

The Guardia Civil have already been experimenting with a "Saliva Sampler", which is a test capable of detecting 23 different substances, such as cannabis, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, antidepressants, anxiolytics or hypnotics, using just a small sample of saliva taken from under the tongue with a cotton bud.

Oh, and picking up on one of the comments to this news, don't forget that this doesn't only apply to yoofs taking drugs recreationally, but also to "persons of a certain age", who might be taking such medications on prescription.

This is the 10th year of the craft fair in Adeje and will also include products and artistry that are traditional from the island of La Gomera, including their wines, sweets, traditional sauces and candies.

Looking Over Garachico

Looking Over Garachico

This image of Garachico was taken from the mirador, looking down between the lava flows. The second major lava flow of the 1706 eruption occurred at 8 a.m. on May 13th, 1706 (shown in yellow on this image). Several landmarks can be seen quite clearly on this view, starting from the obvious blue of the swimming pool on the sea front, come inland two blocks to where there are rows of dark green dots. Those are the trees of the Plaza de la Libertad. A little to the right of there is a particularly large white building with terracotta red roofs and two black patches (those are courtyards). That building is the former Franciscan Convent, marked on the map; circled and labelled "ESTA AQUI" (You Are Here) to where that lava flow reached and, some would say, miraculously, skirted around.

The Way We Were

The Way We Were

This previous image, looking down the Esteban de Ponte street in Garachico was taken from the same spot where the children in this photo are waiting.

This old photo that hangs in the former Franciscan Convent (now a museum), was taken around 100 years ago and in it, we can see two of the houses that run up the side of the Plaza de Juan González de la Torre, which are still there today.

The inscription under the old photo reads: Plaza de la Fuente (Fountain Place) "Surrounded by magnificent houses, the small Plaza de Abajo (Lower Place) or Plaza de la Fuente (Fountain Place) was renamed in 1917 after the mayor who had remodelled it: Don Juan González de la Torre. The gas lamp dominates one corner of the picture and stands opposite two houses which were built on land belonging to the Marquis of Mondéjar. The house on the left later became the headquarters of the Mail Service, as is evident by the letterbox which can be seen in the wall next to the window; and the other was the Doña Gregoria Boarding House, the most important establishment of its kind in the municipality which provided accommodation to traders and temporary workers as well as the odd tourist from England. And on the corner, children are waiting for the bus, which stopped nearby. The benches seem to be the same as the ones which still stand today, as if nothing had changed over the intervening years."

The first of those houses no longer has the letterbox, but it does still have the niche, which contains a religious icon, that you can see between the two upstairs windows. Today, the Doña Gregoria Boarding House is a grocery shop, but otherwise, both houses remain almost completely unaltered. And yes, those benches and lamps do still seem to be exactly the same, apart from the fact that the latter have now been converted to electricity. I like the way they say "odd tourist from England". Is there any other type? :) See where this picture was taken. [?]

Cristóbal de Ponte

On the wall overlooking the Puerta de la Tierra in the park of the same name in Garachico, is this bust of Cristóbal de Ponte, the Jewish merchant and banker from Genoa, who founded the town in 1496. While much is written about Alonso Fernández de Lugo's military conquest of Tenerife, much less is commonly known about the part that Garachico's founder, Cristóbal de Ponte, played, both at that time and in later generations of Tenerife's development. It was Ponte who financed de Lugo's campaign and made it possible at all. Ponte received vast tracts of Daute, Garachico and Adeje, plus the hand of Ana de Vergara, sister of fellow conquistador, Pedro de Vergara, in return.

Puerta de la Tierra

The Puerta de la Tierra (literally, Door to the Land, Landing Gate maybe, or even Gate to the Earth, because Spanish only has one word, puerta, to serve for both door and gate and only one, tierra, to signify land or earth - as in dirt or planet) in Garachico, is set in a lovely tree-filled garden behind the Plaza de Juan Gonzalez de la Torre. This "stone structure was designed to control passengers and goods that came in and out of the port. It dates back to the very origins of the Port of Garachico itself.", say PuntoInfo. Since the 1706 eruption that filled in Garachico's deep water port, the Puerta de la Tierra has been quite a long way inland.

This full size image shows the two major lava flows that affected the town. The bright green one, at 9 p.m. on May 5th, 1706 was the one which filled in the port. You can see from the dotted blue line shown on this image of a modern aerial photo, overlaid with the paths of the 1706 lava flows, where the limits of the former deep water port had been. Just to the left edge of that blue dotted line is a square dark green patch. That is the Parque Puerta de la Tierra, where this structure is located. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Grarachico, pueblo rico

Grarachico, pueblo rico
 On May 5, 1706

"Garachico was the only port in Tenerife, with a breakwater of rocky isle and water so deep that the yardarms of men-of-war could almost touch the vineyards. Its quays were bordered by large provision-stores, it had five convents, and its slopes were dotted with villas. After an earthquake during the night a lava-stream from several cones destroyed the village Del Tanque at 3:30 A.M., and at 9 P.M. another flood entered Garachico at seven points, drove off the sea, ruined the mole, and filled the port. It was followed by a cascade of fire at 8 A.M. on the 13th of the same month, and the lava remained incandescent for forty days, overwhelmed 'Grarachico, pueblo rico.'"
From: To the Gold Coast for Gold, by Richard F. Burton
These buildings, which run up the side of the Plaza de Juan Gonzalez de la Torre, may well have been amongst the provision stores mentioned in Burton's narrative - one is indeed still a shop - that bordered the quays of the old port.
