Vintage Car Rally

At around carnaval time (Feb-Mar) each year, La Orotava holds a Vintage Car Rally. (On the last Sunday morning of the carnaval in Santa Cruz too, you can see many of these cars gathering and cruising around the city.) For a relatively small island, there seems to be a considerable hidden population of these delightful classics.

And yes, that does translate, directly, as "Mother-in-law's Seat". This cactus is in an ornamental garden behind the medical center in the village of El Palmar, but you'll find them all over the island. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Produce from Tenerife's Market Garden

Market Garden

If authentic is what you want, it's the small craft markets and Farmers Markets on the island that will satisfy your needs. This is a stall from the Sunday Mercadillo (Farmers Market) at Los Pedregales in the El Palmar valley. Not a huge selection; not the biggest, not the prettiest. Maybe you're not very excited even, but that's because you haven't tasted them! See where this picture was taken. [?]

T.I.T. This Is Tenerife or Trotters Independent Trading?

Trotters Independent Trading Co?

Of course there have to be places where tourists can be parted from their money around any fiesta and Orotava was no exception. This is a typical stall in a market in one of the town's plazas, creaking under the weight of dodgy gear; Rastafarian scarves, silly hats, toys, Ronaldinho posters, Fernando Alonso merchandise and all manner of World Cup kitsch. Actually, I think this might be Del Boy's stall, because at this end - in front of an England banner (no kidding) - were a couple of those mechanical yappy dogs (click for image) that he was selling out of a suitcase back in 1983. (Apologies to those of you who were not among the 9.7 million viewers of this episode of Only Fools and Horses.) In the same market were South Americans selling goods from South America, Africans selling carved wooden items from Africa and Chinese people selling toys and brick-a-brack, guess what, Made in China! It's amazing what turns up in Tenerife. See where this picture was taken. [?]

We've seen carpets made by visiting delegations to La Orotava in 2006, from Tiaxacala in Mexico, Mühlenbach in Germany and Rome, Italy. This was the turn of Kobe in Japan, whose flower carpet, most appropriately, depicted a traditional Geisha (literally art-person). See where this picture was taken. [?]

The coin in the sun's meter ran out when I tried to take this shot, but Jose Mesa has more images of this carpet here and a whole LOT of images of all the carpets in this set. It has fine Baroque decoration on the woodwork, especially on the balconies. Today, in four distinct areas, the salon restaurant (which gets a nice write up here in the Telegraph), cafe/tearoom, patio and winebar, the establishment caters for coctails, conventions, galas, weddings and the occasional concert. El Bano de las Cabras

And on the morning of Midsummer's Day, June 24th, whether you wake up with a hangover or not, things get even weirder with the annual baño de las cabras (goat dipping), which kicks off in Puerto de la Cruz harbour from 8 am. More details of this again in Jack Montgomery's article, A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

The Eve of San Juan

image

San Juan's night is full of bonfires, fireworks, music, dancing, sardines and bread. It's the welcome to summer, and its celebration takes place during the shortest night of the year. Whilst Solstice revelers in the UK are, of course, heading for Stonehenge, in Tenerife, they'll mostly be heading to the Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz for the Noche de San Juan - the annual Saint John the Baptist Eve Bonfire Night Extravaganza - which has to be one of Tenerife's most curious fiestas (well, apart from all the other curious ones, that is) and sounds more like a night out at a hippie convention, rather than something for whole families - of "ordinary folk" - from kids to grannies. The best explanation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

We're Going to Germany

We're Going to Germany

Nah, this is not a reference to the 2006 World Cup - though, believe it or not, I did find market stalls in La Orotava, selling World Cup kitsch. This flower carpet, which again is one of the international representations at the Corpus Christi celebrations in La Orotava, Tenerife, was made by the visiting delegation from Mühlenbach in Germany. Most apt, I think, that it includes that most important element which Germany and the Canary Islands share in common - the vines.

Corpus Christi La Orotava 2006: Mexico

Orotava 2006: Mexico

The sand and flower carpets that are a tradition in La Orotava in Tenerife, have also become a huge tourist attraction for the town. The 2006 Corpus Cristi celebrations in La Orotava were unique in that, as well as carpets made by local alfombristas (carpet makers); individuals and many associations from within the Canary Islands, there were carpets made by visiting representatives of various other countries. Pictured here is detail from the carpet by Humantla from the State of Tiaxacala in Mexico. It's a circular design with a sand carpet in the centre, bordered by whole roses, rose petals, grapes, lilies and other plant material.

We Are Sailing

We Are Sailing

It is no surprise that around islands, sailing is a popular pastime - for anyone including royalty - and there are various sailing clubs around the archipelago, such as the Royal Nautical Club of Tenerife, who organized the regatta you can see in this set of photos. If you are just visiting, there are many who offer sailing trips out of Los Cristianos, Puerto Colon, Los Gigantes, etc. This photo is from a day, way back, when I was offered the chance to go out on a privately chartered yacht - for nothing - and volunteered for "galley slave" duties to "pay my passage". It was a 42 footer, I think. I know nothing whatsoever about sailing, except that I was hooked from that moment on. Pity I can't afford pursue it, really! Smile

Isidore the Laborer

image

Sunday, June 13th this year was the day of La Orotava's Romería de San Isidro (this image is from 2009) possibly the largest of these folk fiestas on the island: this one honours Isidore the Laborer, a Spanish day labourer known for his goodness toward the poor and animals - which usually boasts something in the region of 70 odd ox carts, around 25,000 people and a veritable river of free local wine.

Here also are a couple of video reports, produced by La Orotava's Town Hall, which will give you a more animated impression of the events. The first is of La Romería de La Orotava 2008 and the second is of the Romería de San Isidro in 2009.

Tenerife's North West Corner

image

With the north coast extending up the left hand side of the image, if we were to turn to the right, we'd soon pass the resort of Los Gigantes, the cliffs of the same name we see the beginnings of with the deep gorges of valleys between them.

The little row of "matchsticks" on the left on the lowlands is, in fact, a wind farm.

The Teno lighthouse can be found on the little rocky outcrop, front centre.

And just below that canopy of clouds - the panza de burro from underneath and the sea of clouds on the upside - are tiny dots of the hamlet of Teno Alto.

Corpus Christi 2010

image

Courtesy of Jack Montgomery of Real Tenerife Island Drives, we have this sunny image of the sand carpet made for Corpus Christi in La Orotava this year, just as the finishing touches were being made to it on Wednesday afternoon.

image

But what an unfair bit of bad luck for all concerned that, 24 hours later the sun had disappeared, to be replaced by the first rain on Carpet Day since 1942.

(Mind you, I'll bet Wimbledon would love to be able to boast a rain-free record that long!)

But the rain didn't completely stop play and people still made their flower carpets in the town's streets. Tenerguia have some images here, while the Association of Carpet Makers point to two separate galleries of photos from the day, as well as several posts showing the progress of the making of the carpets throughout the day, from the first photos when work commenced, through to when the carpets were almost finished, on their blog.

Also, according to a press release from Europa Press (via Yahoo Noticias), this year you can follow the progress of the carpet making via the internet on Facebook; the blog of the La Orotava Carpet Makers and also via their Twitter account, where around an hour ago, they said that the wetter than average drizzle in the Orotava valley this morning had not allowed work on the carpets to commence yet.

Tenerife weather - Sail the sea of clouds

imageA little while ago Andrea Montgomery wrote about the weather phenomenon that exists in the north of Tenerife, referred to locally as panza de burro - “the belly of the donkey”.

This is characteristic of almost all of the Canary Islands and consists of an accumulation of clouds at low altitude that acts as a sunscreen that cools everything below it. The phenomenon is a result of the action of the Trade Winds, which, blowing from the north, push the clouds against the mountain slopes, producing an accumulation of cloud on the northern elevation of the islands up to an altitude of 1,500 meters.

(The satellite image above clearly shows the accumulation of cloud on the north of Tenerife and also to the north of the island of La Palma.)

imageOn the slopes where the clouds hit, this produces horizontal rain (the cloud is right there, so the rain no longer needs to "fall" to reach the ground) and the high level of humidity supports exuberant vegetation, which includes the fertile farmland, terraces of vines, as well as the remains of the laurisilva - laurel cloud or rain - forest.

If you live among the hills and valleys of the north, you soon get used to being at cloud level as the terrain acts like a cloud bowl and cloud billows towards you.

Photo: Miguel Ángel Caro BayoOn the upside: The mar de nubes - "sea of clouds" is the panza de burro - “the belly of the donkey”, as seen from above. (Photo: Miguel Ángel Caro Bayo)

This horizontal accumulation of stratocumulus clouds, which occurs at approx. 500 to 1,500 meters, loaded with humidity in it's lower section, explains the phenomenon of thermal inversion - in which the temperatures above the cloud line are higher than those down under the cloud cover.

Photo: Charles Francis StoneWhilst it's possible that you've flown through cloud before, there is something eerie, weird and, at the same time exciting the first time you actually drive up into the clouds. Open the window at your own peril: the chill factor and the humidity are much stronger than with fog!

But if it's a cloudy day below, this is an ideal opportunity to go up into the mountains. What you miss by not being able to see other islands clearly because of the cloud cover is more than made up for by getting up into the sunshine and when you look out on that vast sea of clouds that spreads out before you.

If you don't drive up the mountain, you can always take the bus. Route 342 leaves from Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos in the south and the 348 goes to the Teide National Park from Puerto de la Cruz in the north of the island.

Artists impression of Columbus passing the Canary Islands

And, of course, the trade winds that bring this sea of clouds is useful for other reasons too. There's windsurfing, sailing and cruising today.

And who could forget that chap who must have made much use of those prevailing winds as he sailed past in the summer of 1492 on his way to ... getting lost!

Corpus Christi Carpets in La Orotava

As we've already indicated, this coming Thursday, June 10th, 2010 will be Día de las Alfombras (Carpet Day) once more in the town of La Orotava, where the biggest of these Corpus Christi celebrations takes place.
Carpet Day, when these carpets of sand and flowers are made in the streets, is always held in La Orotava on the "octava" 8th day of Corpus Christi, i.e. the following Thurdsay after the date of the religious feast itself.
Our calendar provides the dates until 2022, for those who like to plan ahead!
Around 100,000 people crowd into the streets of the town each year to see these sand and flower carpets.
La Orotava families, many still with the same surnames since the 15th Century conquest of Tenerife, start making the flower carpets from the early hours of "carpet day." Late morning to early afternoon is the best time to see them whilst they're still being worked on by the artists, but are virtually complete, so one is able to visualize the finished article.
The central sand carpet made in the square of the town hall (pictured) made the Guinness World Record for Largest Sand Painting; the 859.42 square meter "alfombra" or carpet of sand created in La Orotava in Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain) in June 2007.
In the early evening the procession walks all over these ephemeral carpets and destroys them, so the "window of opportunity" to see them is very short. Don't miss them, because even if you have no religious interest, as works of art, they are breathtaking and for once I wish we had the ability to produce "smellyvision", because, if the sight of them is magnificent, then the aroma of tons of toasted plant material and the plethora of petals is close to hypnotic in itself.
See images of La Orotava's Corpus Cristi carpets in 2006, 2007 and 2008

NB: Many other towns and villages celebrate by making their own versions of these carpets in streets and squares around the island and many of those will do so today, Sunday. The best time to find them will be around the middle of the day.

Casa Monteverde

image

Just round the back of the Iglesia de la Concepción - the Church of the Conception (a National Monument), in La Orotava, is the classical facade of the Casa Monteverde. It's not apparent from the street, but behind this facade is a large, two-story, mansion, built around a central patio (see satellite images).

This house, at number 6, Calle Collegio, dates to before 1675 and was constructed by Juan Van Dalle y Espino and his wife, Maria de Ponte y Molina. And it was from this house in the middle of the 19th Century that the making carpets for the Corpus Christi celebrations was begun by Leonor del Castillo y Monteverde.

The original name of the German merchants, established in Flanders, was Groenenberg, but was later translated to the Spanish, Monteverde, shortly after Jacome Van Groenenberg had moved to La Palma in the 1500's.

Casa Monteverde also has the claim to fame that the Infante Enrique de Borbón (brother of the king consort to Isabella II of Spain) - and the first ever member of the Spanish Royal family to visit the Canaries - stayed there in 1864.
