Holly Berries
Acebiño or acebo canario are the local names given to (Ilex canariensis) a small-leaved holly also endemic to the Macaronesian islands as well as the Canary Islands archipelago, which is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. It's a shrub or small tree growing up to 10 meters in height, with oval leaves that have little or none of the spine-tipped serrations so familiar on its more northerly cousins.

Cañón Tigre
On 25th July 1797, the surrender was signed after Nelson's failed attempt to take the port of Santa Cruz in Tenerife and after a shot from this cannon (supposedly) had shattered Nelson's arm. Reenactments have marked the anniversary of this proud victory for the local people of the island. The gun can be seen in the Museo Militar de Almeida (The Almeida Military Museum) in Tenerife's capital.

Greenpeace makes an example out of Tenerife
The environmental organization has published a report calling the construction of the port of Granadilla "irrational".
"Tenerife's urban growth is excessive, the industrial port in Granadilla de Abona is the paradigm of irrationality and, in general, the island shows a worrying disregard for the natural environment." These are just some of the statements Greenpeace makes in its report Destrucción a Toda Costa 2010 (Destruction At All Costs 2010), detailing the rate of destruction of the Spanish coast during the past ten years.
"In the last 20 years an area equivalent to eight football fields has been destroyed on the Spanish coast each day."
The environmental organization, which has analysed the 8,000 miles of the coast of Spain, considers Tenerife as one of the clearest examples of "contempt" for the environment and qualifies the urban expansion of the Island "relentless" .
The document indicates that in Fuerteventura, the built-up area has grown by 159%; in Lanzarote, it has increased by 60 % and in Tenerife, that growth has been 51%.
In 2007 there were two municipalities that expanded their urban area more than 100%; San Miguel de Abona, where it grew by 172% and Adeje, with 194%.
Greenpeace says overbuilding in the Canary Islands has hurt the tourism industry, causing it to suffer a decline in occupancy levels.
For example, the number of hotels on the islands increased by 19% between 2000 and 2004. In 2007, the Spanish tourist industry recorded its sixth consecutive year of revenue losses, but even so, planned to build 202,500 new hotel rooms, of which 52,500 were in the Canaries. Another case highlighted in the report is the industrial port in Granadilla, which is considered "the perfect example of irrationality."
Despite adverse reports by the Directorate General of Coasts and Conservation of Nature and, that this stretch of coastline was earmarked by the Ministry of Environment in its list of candidates for National Park, the Government of Spain gave its approval for the port to go ahead in 2003. "The speculative interest behind the project has managed to overcome all barriers," complains Greenpeace.
Although the Canary Islands are not included in the 7.7 hectares that, from 1987-2005 were destroyed daily along the Spanish coast, the environmentalists' report points to the dark future that awaits the Islands. "The Canary Islands is facing a legacy of illegal urban construction in many parts of its coastline".
Politicians are not spared criticism from Greenpeace, which reports that the Canary Islands in 2008 boasted "the dubious honour of being the autonomous region, together with Andalusia, where the most mayors and councillors were involved in urban corruption." The tourist moratorium remains a useless bit of paper.

Pedrito, Tenerife's Illustrious Son
Pedrito, the Spanish footballer who plays for FC Barcelona and the Spain national football team, who was born in La Laguna and raised in Abades (Arico), in Tenerife has been honoured for his part in Spain's 2010 World Cup win in South Africa.
Not quite the Sainthood I'd suggested (see I was only half joking, because the importance of the first Tenerife player to play in a World Cup final, let alone win it, makes the 22 year old into an enormous hero in the hearts of the islanders), Pedro Rodríguez Ledesma was yesterday named Hijo Ilustre de la Isla de Tenerife (Illustrious Son of the Island of Tenerife) in a presentation made by president of the island Cabildo, Ricardo Melchior.
Today, Pedro will also be presented with the Medalla de Oro del Archipiélago (Archipelago Gold Medal), as was Gran Canaria born player, David Silva.

Bamboo Bonanza
Actually, the jury is still out over whether this - which is found all around the valleys of the north of the island and, is used in basket making - is bamboo or sugar cane. It's probably more likely to the the latter, since the first crop grown on a large scale on the island was sugar cane and by the middle of the 16th century Tenerife had twelve sugar mills in operation. Day 3 Report from the Tenerife Ladies Open
"The Weather on the third day is super for golf; not too hot, about 21°c with a moderate wind blowing off the sea. The greens are running very fast today so I think we will see a lot of three putts and a little frustration creeping in from the players."

Casa Palacio of the Counts of La Gomera
What do La Antigua Guatemala and Tenerife have in common, apart from our respective Daily Photo Blogs? It's a Saint! Hermano Pedro, the "first Guatemalan and Tenerifean saint", who was born in Tenerife and died in Antigua Guatemala.
His tomb is in the San Francisco Church, in Antigua Guatemala.
It is said that Hermano Pedro introduced carpet making - to commemorate Corpus Christi - into Guatemala, which, from there, spread to many other parts of America. I'm not sure that sounds at all likely, since the carpet making tradition was not popularized in Tenerife until 19th Century, but so much is lost in myth and legend that it is almost impossible to be absolutely sure.
What we do know is that a distant relative of the Sainted Brother, Fray Luis de San José de Betancur, went to Guatemala with the Count of la Gomera in 1633 and, it was from this relative that Pedro had first heard of those far off lands.
The palace pictured, also known as the Casa de la Piedra (Stone House), is situated opposite Plaza de la Libertad, in Garachico, Tenerife. Building started at the end of the 16th century and was finished in the second half of the 17th century. The original owners were members of the Ponte family and later, it came into the hands of the Counts of La Gomera, by marriage.
The Plaza de la Libertad is where the statue to South American liberator, Simón Bolívar, stands (whose Ponte family ancestors were born in Garachico).
It was on that pavement running between the two that a sand carpet was made during the events that had commemorated the 300th Anniversary of the eruption which had destroyed the town's port. During that event, Orotava mayor, Isaac Valencia, had made much of his own recent visit to the Americas - to San Antonio, Texas, which had been founded by Canary Islanders - for their 275th Birthday.
Loosely apt for America's birthday, we think.

Anniversary of the Derrame del vino
The Derrame del Vino, which took place on the night of July 3rd, 1666, is when local wine growers of Garachico poured gallons wine down the drain, in protest over ruinous prices, putting an end to the British monopoly of the sector.
There's even this statue in Garachico to celebrate putting those dastardly Brits in their place. See it along the sea-front road in the town.

Tenerife View of the Week – The High and Low Lands of Isla Baja
"Coaches bring tourists to famous Garachico, but it’s really only the more intrepid independent travellers who explore Tenerife’s secret region, Isla Baja in any depth. Which means that it’s a great place for walking on Tenerife for people wanting to discover a part of the island which tourism has barely touched."

Tenerife Fiestas in July
In July are held the Fiestas del Carmen, which are celebrated most largely in Puerto de la Cruz in the north of Tenerife. The effigy of the Virgin del Carmen is carried through the streets to the harbour, where it is then boarded onto a boat, for a “sea parade” and a ceremony to bless local fishermen. On July 25th, the Tenerife capital, Santa Cruz, celebrates the anniversary of its famous and proud victory over English Admiral, Horatio Nelson, whose failed attempt on Santa Cruz, on July 25th, 1797, cost him his right arm.
