In other parts of the world, you pay fortunes for one of these delicacies. In Tenerife there are so many fig trees growing wild that they honestly don't know what to do with them, though local dried figs can be bought in large bags. These are often served with local goat's cheese - as a starter - and are very popular.

The Problem with Tenerife is that there’s a Lack of TQM.
"when you pay a lot of money to produce a high quality book aimed at visitors to your island, it would only have cost a fraction of the budget to pay someone who speaks English as a first language to translate the English text into something more digestible. Same with the German. It’s not as though it would be difficult to do that here."

Desert Mountain

Or, a mountain of deserts ... and this was only some of the choices on offer in the Pasteleria El Aderno in Buenavista del Norte. Topically, they named the little pyramid shaped chocolate mouses, "Teide", after Tenerife's volcano.

Social crisis in Tenerife as crimewaves soar
"Local Police chiefs throughout the island say they are overwhelmed by the numbers of denuncias for thefts that they have to deal with, not just of empty premises, but now very often of premises where the owners were at home and asleep. Fish & Chips

Tenerife style at the restaurant La Cabaña in Buenavista del Norte. Grilled cherne (grouper), mojo verde (corriader sauce), chips and salad. Normally I would order traditional papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes), but I fancied chips for a change. This looks simple, but it was just so succulent, so delicious, I was close to licking the plate! They bring bread and Alioli (garlic mayo) to start. I had just water to drink and a small coffee after. Total cost, 10 Euros (about £6.75, 2006 prices.)

Double Glazing

Double glazing in the Canary Islands is close to the rareness of hen's teeth or rocking horse poo. And it just isn't considered necessary. On this house, modern aluminium windows have been fitted on the outside of the existing, traditional wooden, shuttered windows that had been warped by age and weather and no longer adequately or securely closed. Mind you, in winter here in the north and, especially against the sometimes battering north winds, I would beg to differ with the usual opinion and was immensely glad of it. And they certainly still have their uses year round, as the best way to keep cool in summer is to keep the shutters closed to keep the cool in. This photo, obviously, was taken one evening, when the setting sun reflected the tops of the Teno mountains on the glass.

Can You Trust Tenerife Hotel Reviews on TripAdvisor?
"TripAdvisor is an extremely valuable source of information, but its greatest strength, first hand views and opinions from real people, can also be its weakness. Horsing Around

It's a fact that whenever there is a fiesta, a whole army of beer stalls, food stalls, sweet vendors, market traders and more descend upon the town or village hosting it. Oh, never mind if you prefer Coke, I think they were only selling beer. :) That's what this guy bought, anyway - without even dismounting from his horse. At the point I took the photo, the stall holder was just handing him his change, after which he just casually rejoined the fiesta procession, swigging from the bottle.

Another Alley

When I watch the tourists who drive through the El Palmar valley, a few stop their cars at the side of the main road and take photos at a distance, of La Montañeta. But whenever I've gone for a stroll through the back roads or the village, I never, in over 9 years, ever come across any "strangers" veering off the beaten track. Do they realize what they're missing? You have to poke your nose into side alleys, let alone side roads - something that's true of anywhere - to see the best bits. From the main road in El Palmar, you wouldn't even see this alley. Even close, you see only modern frontages, but lurking behind are more lovely old houses.

Ashamed of Admitting to Staying in Tenerife?

Back Alley

One of the best ways to see some of the more unusual bits of Tenerife is to poke your nose into side alleys that often, at first, look entirely uninspiring. The best view of this alley is in the opposite direction, as it opens out onto Buenavista's central Plaza de los Remedios, but as we walk in this direction, the town’s oldest house is on our left and La Venta, shop and tourist office is on our right. Further down on the left, where the building is painted red, is the back of the Pasteleria Aderno (bakery) and, if you turn right there, you'll immediately arrive at the restaurant, La Cabaña, where I can confirm, they do a really good fish dinner.

Pink Charm

There are prettier alleyways, of course, but this one, which leads directly off the tiny square next to the church in the village of El Palmar, does have it's very own kind of charm. The quaint little parked pivi - essentially a motorized box on wheels capable of high speeds up to about 10 miles an hour - that is still a very common mode of transport around here. Also, what I usually find is that behind these very plain facades, usually lurk - albeit humble - little palaces.

Heavenly Approval
"So go ahead, eat, drink, and be merry, for it makes no difference to God!"
[Ecclesiastes 9:7.] If ever there were any debate (and there is much opinion on the subject) about whether it’s a sin or social offense for Christians to drink wine or strong drinks, I think we can see the local opinion here in this "still life" that was arranged on a temporary altar set up outside the church of La Consolación in El Palmar, during the Corpus Christi celebrations. The church was closed for renovations and you could buy Christmas lottery tickets already in aid of the restoration, so I guess gambling is not considered sinful either.
The communion wine in the decanter could, of course, be anything, even just coloured water, but I doubt it here: real wine is probably cheaper. In the basket there seems to be bread, a bottle of local wine and a bottle of champagne!
Indeed, Ecclesiastes seems to have perfectly understood the spirit of Canarian festivals: "Well, one thing at least is good: it is for a man to eat well, drink a good glass of wine, accept his position in life, and enjoy his work, whatever his job may be, for however long the Lord may let him live" [Ecclesiastes 5:8.]

Chorros del Epina
We take another flying visit across to the nearest neighbouring island of La Gomera today to the very stuff of myth and legends: the Chorros del Epina.
These seven “magical” fountains are intrinsically wrapped up in Gomera's very own Romeo and Juliet legend, involving Gara, a princess of Agulo on La Gomera and Jonay, the son of the mencey or king of Adeje on Tenerife.
According to the legend, "During the festival of Beñesmén, it was the custom of unmarried girls of Agulo to gaze at their reflections in the waters of the Chorros del Epina. If the water was clear, they would find a husband; if muddy, some misfortune would befall them. When Gara looked at the water, she saw her reflection clearly. However, she gazed too long and the sun's reflection blinded her temporarily. A wise man named Gerián told her that this meant that she needed to avoid all fire or it would consume her."
To cut a long story short, Jonay came to Gomera, they met, fell head over heels in love, then Teide began to erupt as if in disapproval of their union. So the parents called off the engagement and, as is customary in all these kinds of stories, rather than be separated, the pair took their own lives.
Not entirely in vein, since Gomera's Garajonay National Park is named after them.
Now I can't tell you when the the festival of Beñesmén is/was held, but I can tell you that festivals in honour of the patron saint of farmers - San Isidro - are held at the Chorros de Epina on May 15th each year. Source: GomeraLive.
Tradition also has it that if you want to find love, you have to drink from these fountains from left to right; men have to drink the odd numbered streams and women the even numbered ones. If you drink from all seven, you will marry within the year, but women who wish to become witches should drink from the men's (the odd) streams. I've read other stories that promise all kinds of luck, money, etc. Sadly for the romantics and other wishful thinkers in the audience, I'm going to advise you not to put any great store in them, but the chorros are a must visit while in La Gomera and, well, you never know your luck, do you? :)
