Breakfast in The Shadows
Normally there to set the scene for the wild night-time partying of the fiestas, a quiet, calm breakfast under the shadows of the garlands decorating the square in the morning sun was really quite special too. With a strong breeze blowing, the rustling noise they made was very reminiscent of the sound of crashing ocean waves. See where this picture was taken. [?]

Curious Juxtaposition
It can be no secret that, to an outsider such as myself, it seems amusing that a supposedly religious event is celebrated with fun fairs, fireworks, gala events and all night partying. (Don't misunderstand me: I'm not saying I disagree with those.) But one wonders if this chap, on top of one of the fair rides, seemingly pointing towards the church with the rays of sun hitting it, sees the same curious juxtaposition? See where this picture was taken. [?]

Fiesta Food
No fiesta would be complete without the proliferation of artery clogging, fast foods such as hamburgers and hot dogs, served from the multitude of stalls temporarily lining the square. The pepitos (hot rolls), usually meat or chicken, are a much better choice, I think. And, just to add that Canarian touch, you can get them with crazy potatoes, which here are called papas, not patatas as they are in Spain.

Kiosk Kanopy
The whole Plaza de los Remedios in Buenavista del Norte is decorated for the fiestas of Los Remedios each year, here with a canopy of streamers, interspersed with lights. The green and white are also the colours of the municipal flag, which was repeated on the pennants all along the main street.

Nearly half of British tourists keep their money on them at all times
"Of those who did carry all their money on them at all times on holiday, the poll found that the average amount was the equivalent of around £300. When respondents were asked if they would carry £300 around with them back home in the UK, 78 per cent of them said that they wouldn’t. When asked why, 34 per cent said they would "fear losing it or having it stolen", despite their apparent lack of concern about this on holiday. "

What Does Going Native in Tenerife Actually Mean?
"Going Native in Tenerife might mean different things to different people but for us it means having the type of experiences that the Canarios enjoy throughout the year. However, it doesn't have to mean going to a remote location where you're the only tourist. The real Tenerife (not purpose built for tourism) is found everywhere, even in some of the main resorts if you look for it. "

It’s Lights out for Smoking in Tenerife’s Bars and Cafés
"But, for smokers out there planning to come to Tenerife in the new year who are groaning at this piece of news, here’s something that might brighten your spirits. Why Do Some Canarios Want to Pretend They’re Guanche?
"If I was a born and bred Canarian, that’s what I would be allying myself with. I would be proudly saying I was Canario, a unique creature fashioned from the best of Europe with a dash of South American spice. What I certainly wouldn’t be saying was that I was a fur wearing primitive…unless in my heart what I really wanted was a return to a simple life of growing crops and having no money, whilst keeping the outside world at arms length."

Mickey Mouse
No sooner has one fiesta terminated in El Palmar, then it's time for yet another one - this time down in Buenavista del Norte each October, held in honour of the town's patrona, Nuestra Señora de los Remedios (Our Lady of the Remedies). She's supposed to have miraculously seen off a plague of locusts that had devastated the area in 1659 - the 350th anniversary of which was celebrated last year in 2009, no doubt with equal intervention from Mickey Mouse and friends.

Just answer the question honestly without bias
"The majority of these Puerto supporters tell us they return to the same accommodation, same months, year after year, but never hire a car to explore where the bus can´t take them. If they did they might find there is a lot more to the island than their preconceived notions. They would realise the traditional Tenerife they enthuse over, starts 5 minutes outside of many southern resorts, often within walking distance. What these so called ‘experts’ don’t seem to realise is that it is easier to promote Tenerife for what it is, something for everyone, rather than subject visitors to their personal prejudices. "

Funeral for Ex-President of the Canaries, Adán Martín
Funeral rites for the former president of the Canary Islands, Adán Martín, who died at a Barcelona hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning where he’d undergone a bone-marrow transplant in August, are to be performed this afternoon at 3 pm in the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de La Concepción - Tenerife's oldest and most important church – in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The burial will take place in private, by request of the family, while his state funeral will be celebrated in the cathedral of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Wednesday, October 20th, at 7 pm, officiated by the two bishops of the Canary Islands. Martín would have been 67 on Tuesday, 19th.
As well as posthumously conceding him the Gold Medal of the Canary Islands, the Canary Islands Government has declared three days of mourning for Martín, who was president of the Canary Islands Government between 2003 and 2007.
Martín, who will be familiar to many expats, also served as mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife from 1979 to 1987, the minister of public works in the island council of Tenerife from 1982 to 1986, a national deputy from 1993 to 1996, vice-president of the Canary Islands and president of the island of Tenerife from 1987 to 1999.
Having had the opportunity to meet the former president personally, in 2006, I can concur with the opinion expressed at Canarias Bruta, that, “above any political consideration, he was a good person.” He leaves a widow, former Government Minister, Pilar Parejo and two children from his previous marriage.

Pimp My Ride, Tenerife Stylee
It’s difficult to decide whether the protagonist of this tale should get an reward for his resourcefulness, or whether he should be considered as a possible future winner of a Darwin Award.
Whatever, he may possibly already have set some sort of world record for the most number of motoring offences committed at any one time – all while still a minor.
What is is about moped users in Tenerife, for heaven’s sake? We’ve previously had a goat on a moped, wearing a crash helmet and then there was the snake on a moped, without a helmet. This time there are no strange animals involved, you’ll be glad to hear, unless you count the reckless two-legged rider, of course …
In this latest report, the youngster was apprehended by the Civil Guard’s Traffic Division in Tenerife after he’d been observed circulating on his moped, on the hard-shoulder of the TF-5 highway, in sentido contrario (going the wrong way.)
The lad explained to the police patrol in Icod de los Vinos that he was on his way to the petrol station to fill up and inflate the tyres. (As you do, I guess!)
The report states that officers found him riding without a helmet, with no driving licence, no insurance, nor documentation for the vehicle, which also didn’t have a registration plate. The motorcycle didn’t have the necessary registration or documentation, as it had been assembled out of pieces of various others.

Mandia Brings Hope As CD Tenerife Grab Point Despite Barking Mad Ref
"It was hardly a quiet day at the office for new CD Tenerife coach Juan Carlos Mandia, four sendings off, including his own dismissal from the dug out, yellow cards floating around like confetti, and all played out in a scorching 30 degree heat. This was much better from CDT, lots of effort and fight right until the finish, but poor finishing and a bizarre referee made it a frustrating 1-1 draw when they deserved more."

Bodegón Patamero
With seating for only 30 people and another dozen outside, the Bodegón Patamero, Las Lagunetas, in the El Palmar Valley is a small and intimate restaurant. The scenery on the way makes the trip worth while, but the very local food (including chickens raised in the back yard) and friendly atmosphere make it even more so.
Do be prepared to be given a number and to wait for a table on Sundays.
