Canaries: more than 7,000 lightening bolts in six hours

imageFor six hours yesterday, the archipelago was on the receiving end of more than 7,000 lightning strikes, because the rains that were falling in the islands were accompanied by electrical storms.

From 14.00 hours on Monday, 7,028 rays have fallen, according to information from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET). These were accompanied by storms that have left rainfall throughout the archipelago.

Canarias registra en seis horas más de 7.000 rayos

UPDATE: And as if those weren’t enough, between 5 am and 10 am, another 8,249 flashes of lightening were countedwho the heck is counting them? - the majority of which happened between 5 am and 7 am. At around 6 am the largest incidence of negative rays, 1,539 – that is ones going from earth to sky – were recorded.

Fiesta de San Andrés, Tenerife, 29th November

San Andrés food stall

Delicious roasted chestnuts, succulent pinchos and sizzling sardines are just some of the street food on offer in Tenerife's Puerto de la Cruz as part of its Fiesta de San Andrés on the eve of Saint Andrew's Day each year on November 29th.

In Puerto de la Cruz, the events are popularly known as the La Fiesta del Cacharro - Festival of Pots (although cacharro translates more to scrap metal) or Chestnuts.

Kids drag strings of tin cans and throw metal pots and pans around the streets of the town to make as much noise as possible (well, more than usual anyway).

The "Castañada" (chestnut feast) is held in the Plaza del Charco square itself.

But quite why Scotland's Patron Saint is celebrated on the island (or indeed why the flag of Tenerife is the same as the Scottish flag with a white saltire (or St Andrew's Cross) over a blue field), with Icod de los Vinos' kamikaze "tablas" or this noisy custom, seems to be one of those mysteries lost in the annals of history.

Some say it was started as a way to drive away a plague of locusts, others attribute it to the cleaning of the barrels with salt water to remove the acid build up. To do this, in olden times, they would roll the barrels down to the sea and, of course, the metal bands would make quite a racket on the cobbled streets of the town.

Despite appearances, which one might derive from the date and naming, the church assures us that these fiestas are not held to honour the Saint. The mere seasonal coincidences with the Saint's day, the time the new wine is ready and the harvest of the chestnuts - and the general habit of tacking celebrations onto the nearest Catholic feast - seem to be the simple reasons for these customs.

Flying High

Meanwhile in Icod de los Vinos, the principal events of the fiesta, starting with the symbolic uncorking of the first bottle from the annual vintage and the tasting of the first wines of the year from the Ycoden-Daute-Isora region, usually take place at the Casa de los Cáceres in the Plaza de la Pila from 8.00 p.m. The tablas, will be hurtling down the streets; El Plano, San Antonio, Hércules, El Salto, El Sol, Los Coches, San Andrés and others, throughout the day & night.

Roque de Garachico

Roque de Garachico

If you ever come on a tourist trip to Garachico, Tenerife and they tell you that this rock was formed during the 1706 volcanic eruption (it's been reported to me that this has been said), then don't believe a word of it! It's basaltic, not volcanic rock, is masses older and, was formed by the receding of the coast and erosion.

This natural monument gave the town its name: "According to popular tradition, its name derives from the Guanche word GARA which means island in reference to its rock, and of the Castilian (Spanish) word CHICO which means small islet."

Though the Roque de Garachico has no human inhabitants, it does serve as a refuge for several threatened species of birds, such as the Little Shearwater (Puffinus assimilis), Bulwer's Petrel (Bulweria bulwerii) and the Madeiran Storm-petrel, (Oceanodroma castro), as well as several migratory species.

Tenerife weather on red alert

OK, it doesn’t get any higher than as RED ALERT for extreme weather – in this case, heavy rainfall and high winds – so it’s probably best to wrap up and stay indoors until it passes. This red alert is operative on the three smaller islands of the province of Tenerife; La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro today, but will be extended to include Tenerife and part of Gran Canaria, Monday.

Hydrangea

Hydrangea

The hydrangea, according to Wikipedia, is a genus of about 70-75 species of flowering plants native to southern and eastern Asia (from Japan to China, the Himalaya and Indonesia) and North and South America. We're used to seeing them in Britain too, but did you know that they also grow well in Tenerife? This one is in a public street in La Orotava, but they can be seen in many a garden and patio.

Woodland Bridge

Woodland Bridge

Deep in the heart of the Bosques de Garajonay or Bosque del Cedro (cedar woods) in La Gomera's Garajonay National Park is where you’ll find this idyllic spot within the most spectacular laurisilva - sub-tropical cloud forests - in the world: a true living relic of the past when all of the Canary Islands and much of the Mediterranean region was covered in this vegetation, way back in the Tertiary period.

The creation of the Garajonay National Park in 1981 and it's declaration as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, gives some idea of the importance of these woods.

Fed by the so-called horizontal rain - clouds brought by the tradewinds that impregnate the vegetation with humidity - the laurisilva forests of La Gomera are the most important in the world, with 400 species of plants, 200 of which are endemic to the Canary Islands. The walk through these ancient forest with moss cloaked laurel trees is like a fairy tale. If you are unfamiliar with the area, it’s recommended to start at the national park's Visitor Center, situated in an area known as Juego de Bolas, in the district of Agulo on the north of the island.

The director of the Garajonay National Park produced a report on the 25 years of management, in honor of the park's 25th Anniversary in 2006. Although the text is all in Spanish, the photos aren't. Smile Right click to download the PDF document here, or get it from the Environment Ministry's Garajonay website here.

View from the Throne

View from the Throne

Some years ago, when I stayed at an abandoned village on the north coast of La Gomera, the bathroom "facilities", amounted to a cement circle built over a hole in the ground in a hut out back, with no door. With nothing to obscure it, therefore, this was the view one had whilst attending to one's morning ablutions. There are worse views, I guess? Smile This is near the famous Los Órganos rocks - 80 meter high cliffs that resemble organ pipes - on the north coast of La Gomera.

The "mirador" (viewpoint) at the Restaurant Mirador del Palmerejeo, designed by architect César Manrique, overlooking the steep-sided Valle Gran Rey.

An article in the Sunday Mirror newspaper once said of La Gomera that "Vertigo sufferers need not apply" and they weren't joking! The roads with "dizzying drops into green ravines" provide as much adrenalin entertainment as a roller coaster ride and are definitely not for the faint of heart. There is even a half joke on the island that there are no bad drivers there, because they're all dead (falling off such precarious precipices does not tend to cause only minor injuries).

Leche Asada

Leche Asada

While we're in La Gomera, lets have something of the typical Gomeran gastronomy, which, in my opinion, is the jewel in the Canarian cuisine crown.

Leche Asada (Baked Milk Pudding)

To make this quick version, all you need are:

4 eggs
1/2 liter of milk
two tablespoons of sugar
a dash of powdered cinnamon
grated lemon rind (yellow is OK, but green is typical)

Method: Beat the eggs in a bowl. Stir in the rest of the ingredients. Pour into a small ovenproof dish and bake in a hot oven for around 20 minutes until set.

Apparently, you're meant to leave it to cool before dressing with Miel de Palma, serving and eating, but heck I could never wait that long. Smile

Miel de Palma, which is the "honey" or sap from the palm tree, is the most representative product of the island of La Gomera. The process of obtaining this sap or syrup is laborious. It has to be collected at night: a cut is made in the crown of the tree and a receptacle placed to collect the "bleeding" sap, which must be removed first thing in the morning, before light, so as not to give it time to ferment. It is then cooked, as soon as is possible, over a very slow flame for two or three hours. And, for every liter of palm honey, between 5 and 8 liters of the raw syrup is required. Those outside the Canary Islands can buy it here.

Spain to guarantee dignity in death

imageIn March of next year, the Spanish Government plans to approve a law to regulate “palliative care and dignity in death”, announces vice-president, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, who was quick to deny that this is legislation covering euthanasia.

According to Pérez Rubalcaba, the law aims to guarantee the rights of patients, their families and doctors and to “a dignified death”, which is the same as saying, “die painlessly”.

He added that this law is to address situations in which it’s known that the terminally ill patient is going to die and will otherwise suffer. It is only for when the case is clinically hopeless and the only expectation ahead of them is a nightmare before dying.

For these cases, “medicine has mechanisms that allow death to occur with dignity, that is to say, without suffering”, for both patients and families.

The Minister underlined that the law will be similar to that in other European countries and cited French law as an excellent example, while reiterating that the current proposal has nothing whatsoever to do with euthanasia. “Euthanasia is a decision that anyone can make for their own reasons, because they are ill and wish to die”, he insisted.

Myth and Mist

Myth and Mist

We take a short trip from Tenerife over to the neighbouring island of La Gomera. If you want to do this physically, it only takes an hour or less from Los Cristianos and, after several trips there myself, in my opinion, it is well worth the effort.

You can understand why there's still laurasilva (laurel cloud or rain forest) on the island of La Gomera when you see mist or low cloud like this over the center of the island and the Roque Agando (video - you'll hear it gets windy there too). This area, if we believe the legend, is probably where La Gomera's own Romeo and Juliet, Gara and Jonay, threw themselves to their death, rather than be parted.

Whether fact or fiction, Gara and Jonay gave their names to La Gomera's Parque Nacional de Garajonay - Garajonay National Park - recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In 2005, the Garajonay National Park, which in 2006, celebrated the 25th Anniversary of its creation, received a total of 854,824 visitors.

You can just make out the shape of Tenerife's Mount Teide in the background.

Are bars suffering because of the presence of AI generally, or because what they are offering is far inferior than what visitors can get in their AI cocoon? If it’s the latter then, as Andy says in her blog, bar owners should stop bitchin’ and start to work to ensure that they raise their game.

For some it’s going to be difficult, or even nigh on impossible because their way of thinking has become outdated. They’ve spent too long on Tenerife without keeping an eye on developments in the outside world and still think that today’s visitors want exactly the same as they did 20 years ago."

No, not the ones you've accumulated on your computer desktop ... These are just some of the many religious icons on display in the church of Nuestra Señora de Los Remedios in Buenavista del Norte. Since I am neither catholic, nor religious, I can't give tell you what any of them represents. Cabbage Tourism

Cabbage Tourism

While I'm not as convinced as they are that it will catch on, as Jaunted travel blog say, "there are niches for every kind of traveler these days". Cabbage Tourism would certainly provide another alternative to Tenerife's "sun, sea and sand ..." image, but I reckon, this is what happens when you let your "tourist attractions" go to seed! Nevertheless, on behalf of the area, I'm going to claim its place on the "Cabbage Route". Somehow, this doesn't seem half as exciting as the "Almond Flower Route", but cabbages do abound around the perimeters of most fields in this area and the one regional dish that is typical to the area is cabbage pottage or soup. In fact, fruit and vegetable tourists of all types would have a field day (pun intended) around these fertile parts and the produce itself can be seen and savoured weekly at the Sunday Farmers Markets.

Tenerife weather one year ago ….

Visitors to the island on November 16th last year (or residents, for that matter) may remember the torrential rains that caused flooding on the north of the island. Particularly affected was the Barranco San Felipe in Puerto de la Cruz, which is shown in this video. Don't ask me whose bright idea it was to park cars in a – usually dry - river bed, but you can clearly see the consequences.

Fútbol Garachico

Looking for something different to do on your Saturday night in Tenerife?

Tonight at 7 pm at the Campo Municipal de Garachico (Municipal Football Stadium, which you’ll see clearly along the seafront road in Garachico, Tenerife), the home club, Club Deportivo Gara are presenting their team for the 2010/11 season.

They have a new slogan too, which translates to: “We’re counting on you, together we can achieve it.” (Which seems to me a whole lot more feasible and believable than the “We’re all in this together” slogan currently being bandied in the UK, but then that would be a political comment and is maybe out of place here! Smile)

From 9 pm, you can support the local team in a match against CD Bajamar.

You never know, you might get to see a football star of the future play.
